Atlantis: Milo's Return (English Subtitled) [HD]

This boat barely floats.
Ouch. I should have read the reviews before forking over the dough. I had no choice, really - the kids found it at the grocery store check-out. The kids liked it - they didn't notice that the animation was no better than 1960's Hanna-Barberra cartoons and that the story was 3 stories awkwardly stitched together. If you liked the moral theme of Atlantis, don't ruin it with this dumbed-down cartoony follow-up. The orignal Atlantis was a visually stunning masterpiece of animation almost in the league of The Lion King and Fantasia. This DVD is not nearly worthy of the Disney name ...

Three Tales Tied Loosely Together
Considering that this "movie" is actually a combination of three stories originally produced for an "Atlantis" cartoon that never came to fruition, I find it to be unfair to judge these adventures as one whole. Instead, I'll give a brief review of each of the three adventures and then summarize the entire movie.

First off, we have Milo, Kida and the gang tackling the mighty Kraken. No, it isn't the Kraken you may remember from "Clash Of The Titans," but a sea-dwelling demon who wreaks havoc in the seas and possesses a small village. The story is probably the best of the three. It is quickly paced and has pretty good development.

The second story is rather boring. It takes place in the American Southwest. A band of "dust coyote spirits" have attacked one of the locals who happens to have found some ancient pottery. Milo's team has to figure out why the "coyotes" are attacking the locals and put a stop to them. The ending of the tale is rather brilliant,...

Extremely disappointing...
Summary:
Extremely disappointing "movie". Disjointed, roughly 30-minute vignettes that seem to have essentially no cohesion. Animation flat and lackluster. Plots tedious and banal. Appears to have been created for Saturday morning cartoons and now just hamfistedly strung together. If you enjoyed Atlantis: The Lost Empire, then I would urge you to save your time and money and avoid this.

Background:
We were looking for a family movie a few weeks ago, came across Atlantis: The Lost Empire and picked it up on a whim. Admittedly, the plot was wholely predictable and the good guys were easily picked out from the bad guys. But no matter... the animation was rich, the story line at least acceptably coherent and you have to root for Milo Thatch as he wins the heart of adorable Princess Kida. The ragtag band of heroic savants only adds to the enjoyment. Our 9- and 12-year-olds really enjoyed the movie and asked for the next one in the series.

Serious...
